Business

The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States, created in 1933, that operates the nation's largest public power system. It sells power at wholesale to 153 local power companies serving about 10 million people in parts of seven southeastern states, plus 62 directly served customers, and manages the Tennessee River system. Local power companies provided about 90 percent of 2025 operating revenues. TVA has funded its operations almost entirely from electricity sales and bond issuance since 1999 and is not authorized to issue equity, so its securities are bonds, not shares.
